The rotator cuff is the 4 muscles and their tendons that originate on the shoulder blade, or “scapula”, and travel outwards to wrap around the upper arm. These muscles mostly twist the upper arm outwards, as in a “hitch-hiking” motion. It is most often repetitive throwing or shoulder rotation activities that are likely to cause a strain to the rotator cuff. A strain to this region will commonly involve the neighbouring structures of the mid-upper back and neck.

In treating a strain to the rotator cuff, it is first very important to avoid the same repetitive motions, in order to give the muscles and tendons a chance to heal. Cold laser therapy is also very helpful in reducing the chronic inflammation and pain associated with strain to the rotator cuff.
